These paintings grow, natural, organic creativity even

Moon in a vermilion sky-scape

1. Creativity has it's own nature and so the paintings grow

Starting with an idea, quite often a vague image idea, which becomes clearer while painting.

I like to use this approach as leaves lots to chance, it's an adventure as opposed to sticking to a set plan based on a sketch.

A more natural, organic process even, allows the painting to travel to it's own end.

"Full Moon eclipse against a vermilion sky" (working title) above, is an example of the transformation and growth of a painting when compared with image 2. below

While working on this painting the image was posted to face book to see the response to the image, below is the painting as it was posted originally.

The purpose of this post is to show how a painting develops through stages from the beginning, it's transformation, like alchemy.

2. A painting begins with an idea that becomes clearer as it's painted.

In comparison , with one-another the two images above, the additional elements create a more dynamic composition, a more appealing and natural feel to the finished piece.

This is an example of how a work can progress, with the addition of numerous layers the painting develops into a more complex narrative, giving character to the painting.

Using thin layers of colour and glazing add depth and space to the image while retaining original aspects from the of the initial idea.

In other words the paintings grow while they are being painted.

3. A comparative scale

I figure a wine bottle is a good prop for a visual comparison of the size of the painting compared to a household item which most people may have at home.

4. The finish

The paint is applied in thin layers which give a smooth finish to the work, so that the canvas surface is flat with little or no obvious brush marks, similar to a classical or traditional finish.

A UV protective layer is added prior to a layer of matt varnish.

5. A painting can be described as a great adventure.

Matt varnish educes light reflection on the paintings surface is much less reflective than gloss varnish which can impact on viewing the finished piece.

6. Traveling the unknown road, surprisingly lit, unexpectedly colourful.

This post is intended to be informative and to assist with viewers understanding of how a painting can transform from beginning to completion.
